Healthy Game-Day Snack Options
Everyone knows that the food is half the fun of game day. Whether your football team wins or loses, it’s essential to have good eats to munch on while you watch the matchup. Unfortunately, game day snacks are not generally the healthiest. From fried foods to pizza or ranch-dipped Buffalo wings, indulging in fat and carb-loaded foods is a classic staple of football season. If you want to enjoy game day without completely destroying your diet, try reaching for healthy snack substitutes that still deliver on flavor. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Hummus and Veggies: Though it might not look exciting, hummus can pack a major flavor punch. A healthier alternative to queso or other dips, hummus comes in tons of flavor varieties from roasted garlic to cilantro and lime. Pair one of these flavored versions with sliced red pepper and cucumber for a fresh, healthy snack that won’t make you feel like you’re sacrificing.
- Oven-Baked Wings: If you just can’t say no to wings on game day, there is a way to make them a little less sinful. Make wings yourself at home by oven-baking them for crispy skin without the saturated fats that come with frying them in oil. Toss the baked wings in low-fat buffalo sauce or even just garlic, salt, and pepper and you will be surprised how tasty they are.
- Tortilla Flatbread Pizzas: It might sound strange, but a flour tortilla makes for a great, low carb alternative pizza crust. Simply lay a flour tortilla on a baking sheet, top it with any pizza toppings you like, and bake it for 10 to 15 minutes, and you’ll have a crispy, delicious flatbread with very little guilt. Mix things up by making BBQ chicken or even southwest versions that will go great with a little football spectatorship.
